KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Two suspects have been arrested on multiple felony charges in Kalamazoo.
Around 12:30 p.m. Monday, the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety (KDPS) received a tip that two suspects were going to shoot up a home.
Officers learned the names of the suspects and what type of vehicle they would be driving. After locating the vehicle, a traffic stop was initiated and a search conducted.
Officers found three handguns and a variety of drugs inside the vehicle.
As a result of this investigation, two adult males were arrested and lodged for multiple felony charges related to the possession of the firearms and narcotics recovered.
This is only the latest gun-related incident to occur in Kalamazoo. Early Monday morning, two teens were shot in two different shootings that happened only hours apart from each other. Both are said to be recovering and no suspects have been identified.
On Saturday, a suspect opened fire in the Westnedge Hill neighborhood from his vehicle, striking four different apartments.
The uptick of gun violence in Kalamazoo has caused local leaders to declare a “gun crisis” in the city.
“I know cities across Michigan and the country are having similar issues; however, we cannot accept this in our community. Every resident has the right to expect no matter what neighborhood they call home it will be a safe place for them and their families,” Mayor David Anderson said during a meeting last week.
Elsewhere, local pastors in the city are calling for an end to gun violence, saying residents must speak up to help promote change
“We want the entire community to not just to know but to lend their voices because we’re actually saying speak up,” Dr. Addis Moore of the Northside Ministerial Alliance told WOOD TV 8. “We want everybody to say something because we think that evilness, actually, it thrives in silence. If we don’t say anything, we give evil permission to continue to grow.”.
