LANSING, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – As COVID 19 hits close to home for the state Legislature, lawmakers are stepping back.
Both the House and Senate announced on Monday all committee meetings and floor business scheduled for Thursday have been canceled following the Sunday announcement by Senator Tom Barrett that he tested positive for the coronavirus. The Charlotte Republican attended two committee meetings last Thursday, with members of those panels going on to at least three other such gatherings later in the day, according to MIRS News.
However, as Representative Luke Meerman remarked, stepping back is not the same as stepping out. “Everything we do has some consequences,” the first-term Republican from Coopersville said on “WHTC Talk of the Town” during his monthly appearance on Monday. “We have to keep a very holistic mentality about all of this because, if you just have an attitude of making sure nobody ever gets COVID again, there are a lot of other things that are going to affect us on a larger scale.”
The state House and Senate are scheduled to meet again next Wednesday before adjourning for the rest of the month.
