KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Wednesday, Bike Friendly Kalamazoo (BFK) announced the opening of its Public Bike Art Competition for 2020.
The art is intended for display on banners mounted on public lamp poles, with themes evoking the joys of bicycling. The Competition is backed by $1,750 in cash awards. The awards will be within reach of desktop artists since entries are submitted digitally.
The Competition is open to US citizens 18 years and older and is aimed at raising funds for public charitable causes related to bicycling. The deadline for all entries is Thursday, September 3 at 11:59 p.m.
Patrick Jouppi, Chair of the Kalamazoo County Public Art Commission, is chairing the jury committee. The committee, comprised of representatives of local art councils, organizations and municipalities will conduct the selection process and certify voting.
Winners will be announced in a public ceremony on September 20 on the grounds of the Vicksburg Historic Village in the Village of Vicksburg, MI on the last day of Bike Friendly Kalamazoo’s Fall Bike Celebration Weekend.
“This year’s Public Bike Art Competition offers an exciting bright spot on the graphic arts horizon. Where other art competitions have had to cancel or postpone their efforts in 2020, BFK’s Public Bike Art Competition can move forward due to its digital format,” Jouppi said in a statement. “That this community raised $1,750 in prize monies during these difficult times testifies to the generosity and public spirit of its sponsors and the artistic support found in the Village of Vicksburg, Michigan.”
