WASHINGTON (WHTC-AM/FM) – Fred Upton has been in Washington long enough to know that politicians can never win, no matter what stance they take on any issue.
In his 17th two-year term as a US House Representative, the dean of Michigan’s Congressional Delegation has drawn the ire of his fellow Republicans for being one of three GOP yes votes on last week’s Democratic-sponsored police reform bill that cleared the Lower Chamber. Upton does have reservations about the lifting of qualified immunity for officers that was part of the legislation.
“Obviously, it needs to be fixed, this particular ‘flaw,’ and I’m convinced that it will be,” the St. Joseph-based lawmaker said on “WHTC Morning News” during his weekly interview on Tuesday. “It was something I felt strongly about, in terms of beginning to move the process forward.”
Over the weekend, the conservative Michigan Republican Assembly threw its support behind Upton’s GOP primary challenger, Elena Oelke, while the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, who has targeted Upton’s 6th district seat as one that could be flipped in November, criticized Upton for voting against the State Health Care Premium Reduction Act that cleared the House on Monday.
