LANSING, MI (WTVB) – While many teams have been making plans to get back to summer training, the future of high school sports in Michigan this fall remains very much up in the air.
At her press briefing Tuesday afternoon, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said she has asked the Michigan High School Athletic Association to consider moving most fall sports that can’t be played without social distancing to the spring, and moving all individual sports like track and field, golf, and tennis to the fall. She said the MHSAA has indicated they will have a decision by July 20-25.
The MHSAA/NFHS Guidance for Re-Opening School Sports was released last month, and is based primarily on direction provided by the MHSAA and National Federation of State High School Associations’ (NFHS) Sports Medicine Advisory Committees,
Under current orders, only outdoor school facilities may be used in most parts of the state. Also, pre-workout screenings will become part of common practice until it is deemed no longer required.
Activities must be done with physical distancing of six feet and all athletic equipment, including balls, should be cleaned intermittently during practices and workouts. All MHSAA out-of-season summer coaching regulations continue to apply, meaning all workouts must remain voluntary and not hold any weight in team selection.
The MHSAA has made no comment yet on the Governor’s remarks.
