PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — A Detroit-style pizza chain is announcing an opening date for their new Portage location.
Buddy’s Pizza will celebrate its grand opening located on South Westnedge Avenue, north of I-94 at 11 a.m. on July 6th.
The restaurant took over the former home of Old Chicago in Portage after they announced their closure last August.
Officials with Buddy’s Pizza say they will also be donating all of their opening-day sales to Housing Resource Inc., “an organization that fights to end homelessness in the Portage area and throughout Kalamazoo County by providing housing solutions for individuals and families who are either homeless or at risk of experiencing homelessness,” according to their press release.
Earlier this month the chain announced that they are looking to hire more than 100 people for the Portage location and they are still hiring.

According to their website, “Buddy’s Pizza invented the Original Detroit-Style Pizza in 1946 at the Six Mile and Conant location in Detroit. The very first Detroit-Style Pizza was created in a blue steel pan used to hold car parts, giving the pizza its unique, square shape.”
