MT. PLEASANT, MI (WTVB) – Central Michigan University has dropped men’s track and field in an effort to save money during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The budget for the program is nearly $630,000 per year. The move affects 36 athletes and officials say scholarships will be honored if the students remain at the school.
With the elimination of the track and field team CMU is at five men’s teams, one below the NCAA Division One requirement.
Eastern Michigan University is cutting salaries of some athletic department staff. Yesterday, EMU athletic director Scott Wetherbee announced that he and football coach Chris Creighton will take a seven-percent cut in pay due to budget issues caused by Covid-19.
Men’s basketball coach Rob Murphy and women’s basketball coach Fred Castro are also having their salaries reduced. Nearly 70 other coaches and staff members will take part in a work share program, where their hours will be cut by 40-percent.
