KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — One person is dead and another has been hospitalized following a shooting in Kalamazoo’s Northside neighborhood.
Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety officers were dispatched at 1:10 p.m. on Thursday to the 1400 block of Princeton Avenue near Bessie Street for a report of a shooting.
Officers that were already nearby responded after hearing the shots, and after arriving they found a 23-year-old man on the ground suffering from a gunshot wound.
A released statement by the department says that life-saving efforts were performed on the victim before he was transported by ambulance to Ascension Borgess Hospital for treatment. The individual was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital.
Police also located an additional gunshot victim in the 1400 block of North Westnedge Avenue. The second individual, a 28-year-old man, was taken to Bronson Methodist Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Authorities believe the original location of the shooting occurred on Princeton Avenue, and an active investigation is underway to determine what led to the incident.
During the Kalamazoo Public School Board meeting Thursday evening Trustee Jermaine Jackson explained how he knew the 23-year-old victim and said that the young man was partly his inspiration to run for school board because he was a graduate raising two young girls. “I’m just saddened that even after doing all that that his life unfortunately was cut short,” Jackson said. The victim’s name has not been publicly released.
