CALHOUN COUNTY, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Two immigrants have been ordered to be released from the Calhoun County Jail following a lawsuit by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).
According to the lawsuit, the Calhoun County Jail has the most ICE detainees of any such facility in Michigan (around 130), and detainees are not accommodated for social distancing. The lawsuit adds that the detainees are held in crowded quarters.
The ACLU was asking for six individuals to be considered for release, many of which have various underlying health issues. The suit also asks that the remaining individuals be evaluated for a possible release.
Wood TV8 reported Wednesday that two of these individuals, identified as natives of Yemen and Guatemala, have been ordered for release by U.S. District Judge Judith Levy, who says that the ongoing pandemic is a severe risk to their health.
Levy also noted that a confirmed case of COVID-19 at the jail adds even further risk to their health.
It is currently unknown whether the other four immigrant detainees named in the lawsuit will be released at a later time.
