CALHOUN COUNTY, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office and Public Health Department are announcing that an inmate has tested positive for COVID-19.
Officials say the inmate arrived at the jail on Wednesday, May 6 without symptoms. Following safety protocol currently being followed in the jail, the inmate was placed into quarantine upon admittance and developed symptoms later in the evening, including elevated temperature.
The subject was placed in a medical negative pressure isolation cell and is currently being treated by medical staff.
This case is not linked to two previously reported cases in the facility, as that inmate tested negative for the virus.
“The Calhoun County Correctional Facility is diligent in protecting the health and safety of inmates and corrections staff,” officials said in a statement. “The facility continues to work closely with the Public Health Department to mitigate spread of the virus.”
Health officials urge citizens to continue using a face covering, washing hands frequently and following all other CDC guidance.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth, as this can transfer the virus from your hands to places where it can get into your body and infect you with COVID-19. This is true even if you are wearing disposable gloves.
- Clean and disinfect frequently-touched objects and surfaces like doorknobs, and handles. This includes shopping baskets and carts.
- Practice social distancing by staying six feet from others when you must be in public spaces.
- Stay home whenever possible.
According to data provided by county officials, as of Monday, May 11, there are 267 cases of the virus confirmed in Calhoun County, 65 total hospitalizations, and 17 deaths.
