WEESAW TOWNSHIP, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) — An 82-year-old Kalamazoo man found in Rug Lake Thursday afternoon is presumed drowned.
Michigan State Police trooper from the Niles Post spotted an overturned rowboat on Rug Lake, off Gardner Road in Weesaw Township Thursday afternoon, May 7, 2020.
The trooper quickly learned a family living near the lake had a relative who’d gone fishing using the same boat.
The trooper borrowed a canoe and was able to retrieve the man’s body.
He had not been wearing a personal flotation device, police said, nor was one found in his boat.
It’s unclear, police said, if the man suffered a medical condition before falling into the lake, but is being investigated by the medical examiner at Western Michigan University Medical Center.
MSP troopers on scene were assisted by firefighters from Weesaw Township and Buchanan Township, Michigan DNR law enforcement officers, Baroda-Lake Township Police, Berrien County Weighmaster, Medic 1 Ambulance and MSP Niles Post’s chaplain.
