KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Kalamazoo’s summer league baseball team has had its season postponed indefinitely due to concerns over COVID-19.
The Kalamazoo Growlers said in a released statement that the Northwoods League would be postponing the scheduled 26th opening date for all teams until further notice.
‘While it’s disappointing that opening day cannot go ahead as scheduled, we are still working behind the scenes to make the 2020 Growlers’ season as entertaining and exciting as possible,” said the Growlers’ Managing Partner Brian Colopy.
Northwoods League officials cited the patchwork of different government orders and health guidelines discouraging mass gatherings as a reason for the delay.
An official statement says that despite the postponement, “where and when baseball can be played, it will be played.”
Right now the league is making frequent assessments of when it can begin the 2020 season, and officials say that they will immediately communicate any changes to fans and teams.
Growlers management is optimistic that the season will go on, though at a later time than was originally expected.
“By working with the Northwoods League, the City of Kalamazoo, and the State of Michigan, we’re optimistic that we can safely start our season later this summer,” said Colopy.
