ALBION, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Two summer traditions in Albion are being called off this year due to concerns over the spread of COVID-19.
The Greater Albion Chamber of Commerce announced on Wednesday that the city would not be holding Summerfest of its Fourth of July fireworks this year.
“This was not a decision we came to lightly, but we feel this is the right decision for the well being of our friends and neighbors,” said President and CEO Eric Worley.
Worley says that organizers can not in good faith hold the largescale events, which could put thousands of people at risk of being exposed to the virus. State health experts have recently said that Michigan could see a continued rise in cases and a second surge during the summer.
“We love cookouts and being with our friends to watch the display in the sky. However, we want to be able to do those things for many more years to come with all of you,” said Worley.
The chamber of commerce is encouraging residents to still celebrate the Fourth of July while adhering to social distancing guidelines and avoiding large gatherings.
Last year Summerfest was held in late June, featuring two days of live music, a car show, and other entertainment.
Other Southwest Michigan communities have either canceled or postponed similar summer celebrations. Last week the Village of Schoolcraft announced that it will not be holding its annual Fourth of July festival this year because of concerns caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
