DOWAGIAC, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Smoking caused a Dowagiac house fire that was quickly brought under control on Tuesday night.
Firefighters responded after 9:30 p.m. to a residence on 101 James Street and were able to extinguish the flames with 15 minutes of arriving.
A resident was believed to be at the scene, but police say they left the home before returning shortly after crews arrived.
Investigators say the resident said he smoked in his garage occasionally, and they believe stray ashes may have ignited a nearby pile of clothes.
No one was injured during the incident.
