KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The Kalamazoo City Commission is changing the format of their virtual meetings to avoid disruptions from online hackers.
On Monday, April 20, commissioners will hold their regular business meeting through Zoom, but those hoping to speak on any issues will have to call a specific number and leave a voicemail which will then be played during the public comment portion on the agenda.
The change comes after their first virtual meeting was hijacked by “Zoom Bombers,” individuals who created fake names to remain anonymous and used the opportunity to disrupt the meeting with vulgar language and hate speech.
Those looking to comment at Monday’s meeting can do so starting at 6:30 p.m. by calling 269-226-6573. City officials will then filter out any recordings that break the rules for commenting during meetings.
Some people are critical that the setup could violate the Open Meetings Act but city officials say it still complies due to Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s executive order that allows government meetings to be held electronically.
The meeting will take place at 7 p.m. Monday and will be streamed on the city’s Facebook and YouTube pages. The agenda can be found here.
Members of the public without computer or internet access can listen to the meeting by calling 269-552-6425 and entering Meeting ID 949 4973 0897 when prompted.
