KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — In order to help better serve emergency workers during the COVID-19 pandemic, organization “Feed the Fight Kalamazoo” has announced that over 800 meals have been delivered in one week.
Feed the Fight is an idea that began in Washington, D.C. and is now being used around the country. Local activist Sally Hadden, as well co-organizers Jodi Michaels and Adam Morse jumped on the opportunity to bring this nonprofit organization to Kalamazoo.
Through Feed the Fight Kalamazoo, community members donate money which is used to purchase meals from local restaurants and then the food is delivered to healthcare workers and first responders.
The food is delivered to locations such as Family Health Center, Bronson Healthcare and the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety.
“Week one has been incredible thanks to the generosity of our local community, both through volunteer time and donations,” officials said in a statement. “Nearly 125 people have donated to our efforts thus far and 37 volunteers have worked behind the scenes, building our website, managing logistics and picking up and delivering meals. Volunteers can sign up for a variety of roles via our website, including meal delivery, technical support, dispatching, event planning, fundraising, and volunteer engagement.”
Emergency responders have expressed gratefulness towards the program.
“What a special treat,” Family Health Center medical assistant Rosita Flores said in a statement. “It honestly means a lot to us knowing that we aren’t forgotten, knowing that the community is showing their support for us and for (our patients). It’s everything.”
