KALAMAZOO COUNTY, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Kalamazoo area students are being recognized for their academic achievement and being awarded scholarships through a county-wide program.
A total of 44 high school seniors have each received $1000 worth of collegiate scholarships by the Kalamazoo County Regional Educational Service Agency.
The agency’s Excellence in Education program awards scholarships each year for students who achieve academic success during their high school career and have plans to attend college.
In order to qualify students must have had a minimum grade point average of 3.7 for the first seven semesters of their high school education.
Nine teachers and administrators were also honored through the annual awarding of educator incentive grants, which is given for them to implement new classroom learning programs and engage with students.
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic and state guidelines to avoid large gatherings, KRESA has announced the cancellation of its annual awards banquet for recipients.
The Excellence in Education program was established in 1986 to recognize student and educator achievement in Kalamazoo County. Scholarships and other awards are supported through an endowment provided by the Kalamazoo Community Foundation, raised through grant funding by the Monroe-Brown Foundation as well as donations by area businesses, non-profits, and individuals.
As of this year 1,847 students have been awarded scholarships through the program, equaling out to $1,364,799 given. A list of 2020 student recipients can be found at the program’s website.
12 Kalamazoo Public Schools students were awarded this year, including six from Loy Norrix High School and six from Kalamazoo Central High School.
