BATTLE CREEK, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The Battle Creek Public School district is preparing to launch their at-home learning plan.
Teachers will begin assigning work on April 20th and will be reaching out by phone to check in on families.
Superintendent Kimberly Carter says students will receive learning materials every other week, electronic resources will be posted online for those who have access, and limited Chromebooks will be passed out for students who need them.
Laptop pickups will take place over the next two weeks at the Math and Science Center parking lot. They’ll begin on April 13th for high school and adult education students and then continue on April 20th for elementary and middle school students.
According to BCPS’ website, “Remote learning for high school students will focus on online learning, and for pre-K–8 students will focus on using packets that have been mailed home, with digital learning as a supplement.”
Paper packets should already be arriving to homes and on April 20th teachers will begin assigning at least one assignment in math and English language arts from the packet each week. Upper grade students will conduct their learning online, using Google Classroom and Clever.
When it comes to the grading process, students from pre-K through 5th grade will receive teacher feedback, but will not receive letter grades for this semester. All students in grades 6th through 12th will be evaluated, teachers will provide feedback on work, and more information on the grading practices will come before April 20th.
One issue some parents have been asking, is what if students left items in their lockers or the classroom? Carter says they’ll schedule days at some point in May where students will be able to come in and pick up their belongings.
