BATTLE CREEK, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — An electrical project taking place in Battle Creek will cause some Transit route changes starting Tuesday, April 7.
The project is by Consumers Energy, who are conducting a five-month electrical upgrade project on Jackson Street downtown. The project will temporarily close McCamly Street, then Capital Avenue SW.
McCamly will be closed first, starting today. Consumers expects it will reopen at the end of April. Capital SW will close around May 1, and reopen on June 8. The exact timeline depends on weather, and any unforeseen work needs.
Officials say the work is to build underground infrastructure for new electrical cables that will improve service downtown.
No power outages are planned during the work, but Consumers will notify those affected if an outage becomes necessary.
During this work, visitors can still access the Riverwalk Centre parking lot from Michigan Avenue. Traffic patterns will change on Jackson throughout the work, and sidewalk access will be restricted depending on the construction stage.
Citizens should remain alert to these changes and maintain social distancing of at least six feet during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The closure on McCamly will affect Transit routes 2E Emmett/East, 3W Kendall/Goodale, and 1W West Michigan on Saturdays. During the closure, all buses will detour outbound from the downtown Transfer Center, using Hamblin, Capital, and Van Buren to get back to McCamly Street.
Buses will NOT service the following stops during this time –
- McCamly and West Michigan (inbound/outbound),
- McCamly near Clara’s on the River (outbound), and
- Willard Library (outbound).
Riders should use the bus stop near Battle Creek Central High School or the Transfer Center on McCamly Street.
Citizens can stay informed with all updates by visiting the City of Battle Creek website.
