CALHOUN COUNTY, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Health officials are now reporting the first death due to the coronavirus in Calhoun County.
The Calhoun County Public Health Department released a statement Friday night saying that the patient was an adult resident at the Advantage Living Center in Battle Creek with underlying medical conditions.
At last reported, there were nine confirmed COVID-19 cases at the nursing home. Five are residents and Four are staff members.
“On behalf of Calhoun County we extend our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of this individual. We are saddened by this death and realize it is difficult news for our community as we face the reality of the COVID-19 outbreak. The importance of staying vigilant in our disease prevention actions is stronger than ever. Not everyone who has the coronavirus will be visibly sick. Following public health guidelines is essential. Please continue to limit travel outside the home only when absolutely necessary, and diligently wash your hands,” said Eric Pessell, Health Officer for Calhoun County Public Health Department.
As of Friday, there are 31 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Calhoun County.
The health department is recommending that everyone:
- Stay home – Do not leave home except for essential tasks such as getting groceries or seeking medical care.
- If you are out, stay at least 6 feet away from others and avoid any gatherings.
- Wash your hands often and well, especially after being away from home, using the toilet or changing diapers, and before eating.
- Do not touch your face or mouth, especially when out
- Check on others – Call your loved ones and neighbors who are most at risk and see how they are doing. If they require an essential errand, see how you can help.
