PAW PAW, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — After deciding to drop their current mascot, the Paw Paw Public School district is asking for community’s input as officials select their new image.
On March 11th the Paw Paw Public School Board voted to retire it’s longtime “Redskins” mascot after Superintendent Rick Reo recommended that the district approve a resolution to remove the nickname at the end of this school year.
The logo had become controversial in the community because of its depiction of American Indians, pitting residents against each other over its future at the schools.
Now the district is hoping to turn the page, asking students, parents, and community members to help them choose a new symbol.
The board created a committee consisting of 30 students to brainstorm an idea for the new name.
On Thursday, an online survey will be sent out seeking suggestions, with a series of votes in May and June to narrow down the proposals.
A final choice is expected to be made by July.
