LANSING, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – The state of Michigan is falling in line with the federal government when it comes to Tax Day 2020.
Citing the ongoing COVID 19 pandemic, Governor Whitmer on Friday signed her 26th Executive Order of the year, pushing all April state and city income tax filing deadlines by three months. Michigan and Detroit returns, as well as other municipalities that had an April 15th deadlines, are now not due until July 15th, while communities that had an April 30th deadline will now have that set for July 31st.
In a statement, Whitmer said, “Michiganders shouldn’t have to worry about filing their income taxes in the midst of a global pandemic. This executive order provides immediate income tax assistance to people as they continue to stay home and stay safe during this crisis. I will continue working around the clock to help our families and businesses get through this time.”
Last week, President Trump instructed the federal Internal Revenue Service to push back its traditional April 15th income tax deadline to July 15th due to the pandemic. There have been calls since then, led by state House Appropriations Committee Chairman Shane Hernandez, for Michigan to follow suit, with the Port Huron Republican saying, “We can eliminate a lot of confusion by making this simple, common-sense change.”
