KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Police temporarily closed off access to a local park after a vehicle was discovered in the Kalamazoo River.
Kalamazoo Public Safety officers responded to Mayor’s Riverfront Park in the city’s Edison Neighborhood around 9:15 a.m. on Tuesday where they found a car submerged in the water.
An individual earlier notified police after seeing the roof of the vehicle on the river’s surface, and told authorities that they were concerned somebody could possibly be inside.
A Kalamazoo Public Safety water rescue boat was used to reach the car with a cable being attached to pull it out of the river.
Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety Chief Karianne Thomas said the vehicle was reported stolen that same morning.
The department says that nobody was found inside the car and that they do not know of any suspects connected to the case at this time.
An investigation into the incident temporarily closed down access to the park. The KDPS Criminal Investigation Division is currently investigating the incident.
