COLDWATER, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Attorney General Dana Nessel is announcing new charges against a Coldwater man who was already facing trial on other charges.
Brad Allen Risner, 28, was already scheduled for trial in a 2013 criminal sexual assault case. After being arraigned Thursday in Calhoun County District Court, Risner is now facing additional sex crime charges.
Risner was arraigned on two counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct during commission of another felony, which was kidnapping in this case.
According to Nessel, the charges stem from incidents that reportedly occurred in Calhoun County during the summer/fall of 2007 and follow a thorough investigation initiated by the Kalamazoo County Sexual Assault Kit Initiative. The purpose of the initiative is to investigate and prosecute cases that arise from previously untested sexual assault kits.
At the time of the reported incident, Risner was a juvenile on probation after pleading guilty to a 2006 third-degree criminal sexual conduct charge in Calhoun County.
Since Risner was 15 at the time of the offense, he is able to be tried as an adult under Michigan law.
Last Thursday, Risner was arrested by the Michigan State Police. He is currently lodged at the Calhoun County Jail on a $200,000 bond.
In regards to the charges from 2013, those stem from a sexual assault evidence kit that was collected in 2013, but never tested until 2016.
“My office will prosecute those who violate the law, and violent criminal acts will not go unpunished,” Nessel said. “My investigators will continue to seek the truth and ensure that unlawful actions are penalized, laws are upheld and justice is served.”
At this time, officials with the Sexual Assault Kit Initiative in Calhoun, Jackson and Kalamazoo counties are continuing this investigation. Anyone with additional information about Risner should contact Kalamazoo SAKI Investigator Mike Slancik at 269-303-8524.
Citizens should note that Calhoun County and Kalamazoo County courts have suspended operations due to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).
