KALAMAZOO TWP., MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Kalamazoo County’s first shop to legally sell recreational marijuana began sales to customers this week.
KKind opened its doors to a line of eager customers at 10 a.m. Friday morning, many hoping to make a purchase at the one of the few fully-fledged recreational pot outlets in the area.
Owner John Taylor told WMMT that the buisness had been selling medical marijuana before, but now hopes to additionally tap into the market for recreational products which has attracted interest from the public.
In January, the Kalamazoo Township Board of Trustees voted to opt-in and allow recreational marijuana growers, processors, retailers, testing facilities and transporters in a close 4-3 vote.
The first sales of retail recreational marijuana began in early December 2019, but this marks the first time a facility will sell the product to consumers in Kalamazoo County.
The City of Kalamazoo itself is continuing to opt out of recreational businesses and has until June 1st to create a local ordinance.
City officials voted in favor of opting out until a further notice last fall. They have since released the first draft of the proposed ordinance, which is available for the public to view.
The retailer will still offer medical marijuana as it did before in addition to recreational sales.
