LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — WKZO has been named the 2019 “Station of the Year” for Market 2 Commercial Radio by the Michigan Association of Broadcasters.
That was announced during the MAB’s Broadcast Excellence Awards in Lansing on March 4th. The ceremony celebrates the best work created by radio and television stations throughout Michigan.
In addition to “Station of the Year,” WKZO took home 7 “Best” awards, also known as the top pick in each award category.
The following categories were won by WKZO:
- Best Newscast: “Jeana Gondek on WKZO”
- Best Breaking News Story: Our radio coverage of the Kalamazoo plasma center shooting.
- Community Involvement: Our “Focus” segments that run Sunday mornings which address a timely issue in the community. This award featured Josh Scott’s “Drunk Driving Focus.”
- Feature Programming: Our radio coverage of the Maple Hill Kalamazoo Holiday parade and segments created by Jeana Gondek to showcase things to do before and after the parade.
- Best Sportscast: “Jim McKinney on WKZO”
- Use of New Media All Encompassing: Showcasing our ongoing effort to inform our listeners via our wesbite, Facebook and Twitter pages, and other new outlets outside of radio.
- Use of New Media Single Project: Our coverage of President Trump’s Merry Christmas Rally in downtown Battle Creek
The amount of awards won are then totaled up to decide a “Station of the Year” for each market. WKZO was honored to receive the award for their work in 2019. This is now the 6th time WKZO has won “Station of the Year” with the last being in 2014.
