ALBION, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — A planned revitalization project in downtown Albion that would include new apartments is one step closer to completion thanks to state funding.
Previously, city leaders in Albion were in talks of a collaboration between the city, Albion Reinvestment Corporation and A.C.E. Investment Properties in regards to securing funding.
The revitalization would include eight different projects downtown, including 18 buildings, over 70 new residential homes, and more.
On Monday, March 2nd, it was announced that the Michigan Strategic Fund had awarded a large grant for the Brick Street Lofts project downtown. Around $930,000 is being dispersed for the project.
As a result, three buildings on South Superior Street will be revitalized. Officials say adding more housing downtown and removing blight will encourage economic growth in the area.
Additionally, over $200,000 in grant money was approved for taking care of any Brownfield-related issues, such as lead paint used in the buildings. Had the funding not been approved, these buildings would have been ordered for demolition.
By itself, the Brick Street Lofts project is said to be an investment of around $3 million. Construction is expected to be finished by the end of the year. Officials are reportedly excited to see the project take form.
