NEW YORK, NY (WTVB) – Five-time tennis major champion Maria Sharapova has announced her retirement at the age of 32.
Sharapova burst onto the scene as a 17-year-old in 2004 when she defeated Serena Williams to win Wimbledon, and she won the U.S. Open in 2006 and the Australian Open in 2008 before completing a career Grand Slam in 2012 with the first of her two French Open titles.
After winning at Rolando Garros in 2014, Sharapova’s last Grand Slam final came at the 2015 Australian Open.
Right shoulder issues have slowed Sharapova over the last few years and she dropped each of her last four matches at majors.
