KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International Airport is currently weighing out options for an expansion of the main airport runway.
The talk of expansion comes following a large grant from the Federal Aviation Administration last summer to study the environmental impact of the project. Before the approval, the airport had undergone runway repaving.
The idea for the project proposal centers around the expansion of Runway 17/35. The north end would be extended by 150 feet while the south end would be expanded by 1,000 feet.
Officials with the airport say that the expansion would make the airport safer all around.
Concerns over the project affecting resident housing in the nearby Milwood neighborhood were also discredited, as officials say the expansion would not affect any homeowners. It also would not alter traffic in the area.
It is currently unknown how much money the expansion would cost, but if the project were approved, construction would be expected to begin in the year 2025. The environmental impact study is ongoing at this time.
