TEXAS TOWNSHIP, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — An error in filing proper paperwork has led to a two-year contract between the Kalamazoo Public Library (KPL) and some parts of Texas Township.
Residents living within the areas of Mattawan Consolidated School and the Schoolcraft Community Schools districts will be able to obtain a library card for two years beginning in July.
The agreement was finalized by the KPL Board of Trustees after an error in paperwork was discovered. Originally, KPL had been providing services to residents in those areas until 1998, when the contract ended.
However, the library was still receiving funds through both state aid and penal funding until 2016. In total, the library received almost $300,000. The decision to end the contract was never properly filed with state officials, which led to the error.
Rather than repay the money that was received, the library will instead allow two years of services to those areas. As a result, over 7,000 residents will gain access to the library.
Beginning July 1, residents can now receive a library card. Cardholders will be able to access all of the services provided. The agreement will last until the end of June in 2022.
The news of the agreement comes following the decision by KPL to waive all late fees at the beginning of 2020. A similar decision was also made by the Galesburg library.
