PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The Portage Public School district is hoping to get a major bond proposal on the August ballot while concerned parents say a different problem needs to be addressed.
The millage request, which doesn’t have an exact price at this time, aims to replace five of Portage’s oldest elementary schools, some of which were built in the 1960’s.
However, at the school board meeting Monday night both parents and teachers complained that the real problem is overcrowded classrooms, especially at Amberly Elementary School.
They explained how large class sizes make it difficult for teachers to give enough attention to all, struggling students to achieve, and excelling students to be equally challenged.
The proposal could also create a new Portage Central Elementary building on vacant land along South Westnedge Avenue which board members say would increase its size and allow overcrowded schools to be better dispersed.
The board has until May to hash out a plan if they want to get the bond request on the August ballot.
