LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Health officials are confirming that a fourth Michigander has died from vaping-related lung injuries.
On Thursday the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services said that an adult woman was the latest whose death has been linked to vaping. They say no other information about the individual will be released due to confidentiality reasons.
That makes her the fourth to die in the state, with 64 deaths linked to vape pens and cartridges being recorded across the country.
The Centers for Disease control has identified the substance Vitamin E Acetate as a possible culprit for lung injuries, with it used in some vaping products with THC.
Michigan regulators recently issued a round of recalls pulling products containing Vitamin E acetate from vape and marijuana shops around the state in response.
Dr. Joneigh Khaldun, chief medical executive and chief deputy for health for MDHHS, released a statement saying, “Although reports of new cases related to this outbreak have decreased in Michigan and across the country, new cases continue to be reported. We urge Michigan residents to refrain from vaping until a definite source or sources have been identified. Health care providers should remain vigilant in educating their patients about the potential risks associated with vaping and report any cases to their local health department.”
