BATTLE CREEK, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — A dog found left alone in a storage unit may soon be put up for adoption, as police search for the previous owner that abandoned it.
The male Great Dane was found on Tuesday, February 4th when workers at a U-Haul storage facility on Beckley Road in Battle Creek called animal control officers, saying that they heard barking from inside.
An animal control officer recieved a warrant to open the unit the following day, discovering the underweight dog with a small amount of food and water, and surrounded by stored furniture.
After being taken into the care of the Calhoun County Animal Shelter, the canine has been of interest to multiple individuals in the area saying they would like to adopt him as a pet.
The shelter has stated that so far more than 50 people have submitted applications to adopt the dog, and their office has fielded numerous calls inquiring about its well-being around the country.
Area police are investigating the previous owner for suspected neglect of the animal, and believe they may have left the dog in the storage unit while they were in the process of being evicted from their residence.
They could be charged for misdemeanor abandonment, which carries a maximum sentence of 93 days in jail.
Now if the dogs owner does not claim him by Friday afternoon, <a href="“>he will be officially released to the animal center to be adopted.
