KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Police are saying that a man suspected of robbing a bank in Downtown Kalamazoo has been taken into custody after being captured by a swat team.
Around 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 12, the suspect entered Chase Bank in the 100 block of E. Michigan Ave. and demanded money from an employee.
The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety says that no weapon was displayed during the incident and the suspect left on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash.
The 28-year-old suspect is being described as a Hispanic male approximately six foot tall with an average build, black hair and facial hair. During the robbery he was seen wearing a dark colored hooded coat, black shirt, a black baseball hat (backwards) and several gold colored chains around his neck.
A day after the incident on Thursday, February 13th public safety officers obtained a search warrant for a residence on the 1700 block of Alamo Avenue in Kalamazoo, believed to be where the suspect was hiding.
At 2 P.M. the Kalamazoo Metro Swat Team executed the warrant and quickly took the man into custody after he was found inside the home.
The department says that a Kalamazoo Township Detective identified the suspect after examining bank surveillance footage and contacted KDPS detectives. With the help of the local FBI office they were able to determine that the man was likely hiding at the Alamo Avenue residence.
During the search the Swat team was able to locate several pieces of evidence including money believed to have been taken during the robbery.
The suspect is currently being lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail awaiting arraignment.
