BATTLE CREEK, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Calhoun County Circuit Court has ruled that the owner of a dilapidated building in Battle Creek must retain ownership in an effort to have him remove the building.
On Monday, February 10, Calhoun County Circuit Court Judge Sarah Lincoln issued a temporary injunction against Bryan DeBolt transferring ownership of the 120-year old Binder Building, which is located at 34 E. Michigan Ave.
Officials say that the building is crumbling and represents a danger to the area. Three of the six stories in the building have already collapsed on themselves internally.
Officials add that DeBolt has a history of abandoning dangerous buildings and the injunction is meant to make sure he delivers on his responsibility. The building must either be removed or demolished.
The Binder Building has been owned by DeBolt for 30 years. Officials are worried that the structure will fully collapse on itself eventually.
Estimated costs of demolition clock in at around $100,000, with rehabilitation costs estimated in the millions.
