KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office has announced that it will now be handling security at the bus station downtown.
The announcement comes after the security contract between the bus station and the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety ended on February 9.
It is currently unknown when deputies will begin monitoring the bus station, since the Sheriff’s office is understaffed. New recruits are needed to fill the open positions.
According to Kalamazoo Sheriff Richard Fuller, there are currently 11 unfilled positions in the Sheriff’s office.
In the meantime, security at the bus station will be handled by Security Plus, a private security company.
The full contract has yet to be finalized at this time, but officials say that the coverage will likely be similar to the previous agreement.
The agreement is currently projected to last through December 31, 2022.
