KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — A teen who shot himself in the leg while running from police on New Years Eve going into 2020 has plead guilty to weapon charges as of Monday, February 3.
Previously, Rodolfo Sanchez was arraigned in court for the incident in early January. Police say that they observed him firing a gun at a porch with people in the Edison neighborhood.
He attempted to flee on foot but was later arrested and the loaded firearm was recovered.
Nobody was injured on the porch but Sanchez did suffer a wound to his leg where he shot himself.
Sanchez claims that he was carrying the gun for personal protection and the residents of the home had shot at him first. Available evidence did not support his claim.
As a result, Sanchez pleaded guilty to one felony count of carrying a concealed weapon. Per the agreement, one misdemeanor count of reckless discharge of a firearm was dropped.
Thanks to Michigan’s Holmes Youthful Trainee Act, Sanchez will have the opportunity to remove the felony from his record. If he does not violate any conditions of parole or probation after serving his sentence, it will be taken off his record.
His sentencing date has been scheduled for March 30 in Kalamazoo County Circuit Court.
