KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Kalamazoo City Commissioners have gotten their first look at proposed water and sewer rate hikes proposed for this year.
It has been proposed that water rates go up 14% and wastewater rates jump by 10%.
Utilities Director Jim Baker says the increases are needed to replace aging and unsafe plumbing and other equipment.
At their meeting Tuesday night Commissioners approved the first reading of the hikes. If they give their final approval at their next meeting, it would mean quarterly bills for city residents would go up $4.71, and non-city customers would pay $9.54 more per quarter on average.
