LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Governor Gretchen Whitmer joined with GM officials announced Monday that $2.2 billion will be invested into the GM Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly plant for the purposes of manufacturing electric vehicles.
The investment is expected to create over new 2,200 jobs.
“Today’s announcement builds on a new chapter in Michigan’s automotive manufacturing heritage, proving once again that the vehicles of the future will be built, tested and deployed here in our state,” Whitmer said. “We are proud to be here today, supporting GM in bringing 2,200 good-paying manufacturing jobs for our auto workers and getting Hamtramck back online, helping to bring their vision of an all-electric future to life.”
Among the all-electric trucks and SUVs planned includes the Cruise Automation’s Origin, a multi-purposed shared autonomous vehicle that recently debuted in San Francisco.
Additionally, GM’s first all-electric truck will be a pickup, with production scheduled to begin in late 2021. Officials say that Detroit Hamtramck will be GM’s first fully-dedicated electric vehicle assembly plant.
GM will also invest $800 million into supplier tooling and other projects related to the electric truck launch.
“The support from the State of Michigan was a key element in making this investment possible,” GM President Mark Reuss said in a statement. “This investment helps ensure that Michigan will remain at the epicenter of the global automotive industry as we continue our journey to an electrified future.”
The investment into electric vehicles is part of a GM investment of $3.5 billion in Michigan over the next 10 years.
