LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The Michigan State Police (MSP) have announced that about half of all recalled breathalyzer testing devices have been reinstated into use.
Earlier this month, MSP announced a recall of several breathalyzer devices manufactured by National Patent Analytical Systems of Mansfield, Ohio, and calibrated by Intoximeters Inc., which is based out of St. Louis, Missouri.
Police say that the issues concern problems with Intoximeters not properly calibrating the devices, which was previously its own responsibility. MSP responded by recalling the devices and using their own agents to calibrate them.
Police say that workers at Intoximeters had improperly calibrated the devices and falsely certified them.
According to a statement, MSP are unaware of how long these practices have been occurring through the company. They are also unsure of when the remaining devices will be reinstated.
As a result, over 50 drunk driving cases may be dismissed because of the falsely certified devices.
MSP have also stated that an investigation into Intoximeters is being conducted to determine if any employees will face criminal charges.
