MARSHALL, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Michigan State Troopers halted a package of cash they say was being sent to accused fraudsters on Friday.
An elderly woman from Branch County was contacted by individuals claiming her grandson was in court in connection to an at-fault crash and needed $15,000 in order to be freed.
MSP says the women withdrew money from her bank account and sent the money to the scammers through a FedEx package. Police became aware of the suspicious package after hearing from those close to the woman, and after contacting the shipping company were able to halt the cash from reaching it’s destination.
Scammers have been targeting older residents in Southwest Michigan, often claiming that loved ones are being held in jail or facing criminal charges. To verify that a call is legitimate, The Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office is asking people to contact them at (269) 383-8723 during regular business hours.
