KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The National Weather Service is extending a flood warning for the Kalamazoo River after an ice jam has failed to clear.
The warning was originally issued on Monday, January 20th when Kalamazoo Emergency Management officials noticed an ice jam blocking the flow of water just a half-mile downstream from King Highway Bridge.
The advisory was planned to expire on 1:30 P.M. on Thursday, but has since been extended to Friday at the same time.
Water levels have been falling this week with warmer temperatures, but the amout of ice being blocked has made the flow of water backed up all the way to Sprikle Road.
Kalamazoo County Sheriff Richard Fuller says they’re continuing to assess the area to determine the status of the ice jam near the King Highway Bridge.
“Right now it looks like the waters are receding, and there’s a plan in place to make sure little damage is done and the water recede quicker,” Fuller said.
