BATTLE CREEK, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — A Battle Creek man has pleaded guilty in a homicide case as of Tuesday, January 21.
19-year-old Drequan Scott confessed to the murder of 58-year-old Howard Gillett in Calhoun County Circuit Court before Judge John Hallacy.
Scott said that he shot Gillett several times, claiming that Gillett was attempting to sexually harass him.
Battle Creek firefighters had previously discovered the body of Gillett during a house fire call on January 1, 2019, although he is believed to have been shot on December 30 or 31, 2018.
Scott had been pulled over on December 31 on a drunk driving suspicion. He was found to have a sweatshirt and a gun that was covered in blood and subsequently jailed.
He was then released on bond before the body was discovered and apprehended later on at a house he was staying at.
Scott will face at least 40 years in prison. There will be a minimum sentence of 38 years for the murder, plus an additional two years for using a firearm in the commission of a felony.
His sentencing date is now scheduled for Monday, March 16.
