KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Kalamazoo Public Schools are warning parents and students about the discovery of bed bugs at Milwood Magnet Middle School.
Last week, bed bugs were identified at the school, which was identified by Rose Pest Solutions. The pest management company is contacted in the event of a bug discovery to find out what precautions need to be taken.
Milwood Magnet was treated on Friday after the building was empty; however, another bed bug was discovered on Tuesday. After searching the school with K-9 assistance, no additional bugs were discovered.
According to the Kalamazoo County Health Department, bed bugs could spread across multiple schools if precautions aren’t taken.
A letter from KPS recommends the following tips:
- Vacuum Regularly.
- Place all clothing and backpacks suspected of carrying bed bugs in a dryer for at least 30 minutes on high heat. Clothing should be washed in hot water as well.
- Do not pick up mattresses or furniture items off the side of the road.
- Inspect all children’s clothing, furniture, and bedrooms for signs of bed bugs.
Inspections into the school will be increased and additional treatments will be undertaken as needed.
