MILTON TOWNSHIP, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Two people are in custody after a hostage situation that lasted over 12-hours near the Michigan/Indiana border.
It began around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at a home in the 33000 block of Redfield Street in Cass County’s Milton Township.
The Fugitive Apprehension Street Team (FAST) was called to the home where they found an armed fugitive from Indiana as well as a woman and a 5-year-old child. FAST is composed of detectives and deputies from Indiana’s Michigan City Police Department, Laporte County Sheriff’s Department and the United States Marshal’s Service.
Multiple other departments including deputies from Cass and Berrien counties, Dowagiac, Pokagon, Edwardsburg/Ontwa Township, and Michigan State Police were all brought in and set up perimeter around the home as authorities attempted to negotiate with the armed man inside the home.
At about 10:10 p.m. Wednesday the child was released from the home but the two were still inside.
It wasn’t until 2:30 a.m. Thursday when a tactical team broke through the garage door and the fugitive and the woman exited the home.
Both were taking into custody and are facing criminal charges in both states. Their names ill be released once they are arraigned in the 4th District Court.
