OTSEGO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Multiple fire departments were called to a local poultry farm after an inferno burned throug the property during the early afternoon Friday,
The blaze affected the Vander Bunte eggs facility, which is located about 25 miles north of Kalamazoo. Smoke could be seen miles away, and as of 2:45 P.M. parts of the building were still on fire even as fire crews worked to contain it.
All of the around 50 employees in the building were evacuated safely. One of the two barns on the property was completely destroyed, and company officials say they can not at the moment estimate how many of the roughly 60,000 hens at the facility were killed in the fire.
Authorities have not released any information so far regarding the source of the fire or whether anyone has been hurt in the incident. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
According to the company’s website, KONOS Vander Bunte Eggs is a local poultry provider that has operated multiple farms in the region since being founded in 1946.
