KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — 2019 marked one of the warmest Christmastimes in memory, but the day after was one for the record books.
Temps in the Kalamazoo area ranged between a hazy 50 and 55 degrees fahrenheit on Wednesday December 25th. The last time there was a Christmas with temperatures this high was all the way back in 1982.
The next day brought even warmer temperatures with a recorded high of 61 degrees in the afternoon. That made Kalamazoo for a short time warmer than cities like Los Angelas, San Diego, Phoenix, and sin city itself.
Meteorologist Mark Sekelsky with the National Weather Service’s Grand Rapids bureau says that largescale pressure patterns in the atmosphere have brought the spring weather to the region. “We have a persistent wind flowing up from the Gulf of Mexico, and the arctic airmass has been dislodged well north of the canadian border,” he said.
That might be the warmest the region could get for awhile though. Forecasts predict much of Southwest Michigan ranging from the low 30s-40s into early January with increasing precipitation, though no sticking snow anytime soon.
