PAW PAW, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Michigan State Police in District 5, or Paw Paw, are warning citizens of a new phone scam in the area.
Police say that several complaints have been received about phone calls from a masked number, appearing to be the Fifth District Headquarters Office. The caller claims to be a lieutenant with the Michigan State Police.
The caller claims that MSP Fifth District Headquarters found an abandoned vehicle registered to the victim with narcotics located inside the vehicle. The are also asking for bank and personal information.
MSP says that anyone who receives a suspicious call should hang up immediately. Any call can be verified by calling the MSP Fifth District Headquarters at 269-657-6081.
Meanwhile, police have issued the following tips in order to avoid getting scammed.
- Do not give personal information to unknown callers.
- Do not respond to unsolicited e-mails from unknown senders.
- Confirm the identity of a contact by independently speaking with the identified source (your bank, credit card company, government agency, etc.).
- Use a reliable sources to confirm the contact’s phone number or e-mail.
- Report any suspicious contacts to police.
Another scam call has been reported by the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office this month, with the scam callers posing as Sheriff’s deputies.
