KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety is warning Kalamazoo citizens about impending risks and precautions stemming from winter weather.
“Each year, numerous people are injured or lose their lives due to winter conditions which cause emergencies such as frostbite, hypothermia and roadway accidents,” the Department said in a statement.
In order to help prepare for the coming winter conditions, KDPS encourages all citizens to visit https://www.weather.gov/safety/winter for a full list of tips involving factors such as Lake Effect Snow, hypothermia, driving tips, and wind chill.
“Each year, the Kalamazoo community has experienced extreme cold weather that has resulted in historically low temperatures that are a significant threat to the health and safety of everyone caught outside,” the Department said. “While everyone is at risk during a cold-weather event, certain populations have a significantly higher risk of a cold-related health.”
The Department says that these vulnerable populations include, but are not limited to, senior citizens, citizens with mobility issues, and those who lack proper shelter.
In the event of extreme winter conditions, the Department will keep the public updated with warming center locations and other ways to stay warm.
