KALAMAZOO TWP., MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Leaders in Kalamazoo Township are tabling a draft ordinance that would allow recreational marijuana businesses in the community, possibly to be reconsidered next year.
At their meeting on Monday, December 9th, the township’s board of trustees rejected the first-appearance ordinance during a 5-2 vote. Trustees expressed interest in redrafting and evaluating what the ordinance could mean once they receive more information, and see how it plays out in area municipalities.
The ordinance would authorize recreational retail marijuana locations, growers, processors, testing facilities and transport businesses operating in Kalamazoo Township. The draft did not allow marijuana event organizers or consumption establishments however.
the board of trustees signaled that they would like to first update the proposed ordinance to reflect a larger variety of business categories that could apply for licenses with the township.
Neighboring Kalamazoo opted to delay a vote on allowing marijuana businesses in the city in October, and Portage voted to prohibit any establishments following legalization in November 2018, with a possibility of reaccessing the decision at a later time.
